India played their first Test match in 1932, led by CK Nayudu. Despite his prominent leadership in test matches, he never represented India in One Day Internationals (ODIs). ODI cricket only began evolving into prominence during the late 1970s; hence many pioneers from earlier eras never got to experience or contribute towards it despite being steadfast contributors to Indian Cricket’s early development.
The Dawn of ODIs and India’s First Captain
It was around four decades after playing their test match when India finally ventured into one-day international cricket. On July 13, 1974, they played their first-ever ODI match against England at Headingley Stadium, Leeds. The person who had the honor and challenge of leading India as their inaugural captain in ODIs was none other than Ajit Wadekar.

Besides being India’s first ODI Captain, Wadekar had a string of accomplishments as a powerful figure in Indian cricket. Under his leadership, India won their first series victories over England and the West Indies in 1971 – a feat that remains immortalized in the annals of Indian sports history.
Additionally, later from the mid-90s until the early 2000s, he served as the manager for the Indian Cricket team. His time as an administrator also stands out due to his ability to spot talent and encourage them to perform at the highest level.

Despite not having any significant success story attached to his career as an ODI Captain, Ajit Wadekar added immense value to Indian Cricket. As a composed leader and flamboyant cricketer, his name is etched forever as one of cricket’s towering personalities.
He was known for staying unflustered even under challenging situations, displaying qualities that are reflective of exemplary leaders. Awarded with Padma Shri award and CK Nayudu Lifetime achievement award for his contributions , posthumously was a testament of his illustrious impact on Indian cricket.
India has been privileged enough to witness some exceptional cricket captains throughout its sporting journey since its inaugural ODI game back in 1974 .
