Born on July 21, 1934, in Pune, India, Borde’s love for cricket began at a very young age. He was particularly acclaimed for his knack to switch gears according to team requirements – From playing defensively while handling pace attacks or spinning assaults to switching roles aggressively pinning down opponents. Despite tough competition from stalwarts like Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and MAK Pataudi during his time, Borde managed to carve a niche for himself with consistent performances.

Over his career span extending over a little more than a decade (from 1958 -1969), Borde played 55 Test matches scoring almost 3061 runs with an average of 35.19 which included five centuries and eighteen half-centuries. It was under his vice-captaincy that India won its first series victory overseas by beating New Zealand in February-March 1968.
While these statistics testify for his prowess as an accomplished batsman, he simultaneously showcased equivalent expertise in bowling claiming forty-six wickets with best innings figures of 4/65.

As a Selector and Manager
Even after retirement, Borde’s heart continued to beat for cricket, maintaining a symbiotic relationship with it. He served as the Chairman of the Selection Committee for the Indian cricket team from 1982-1984. Following that tenure, he was appointed as the manager of the Indian cricket team for various crucial tournaments including the World Cup during 1987 – 1989.
His managerial skills were eagerly sought when India needed a stand-in coach cum manager during their tour of England (2007) after Australian Greg Chappell resigned abruptly.
