Lucknow Supergiants is a fresh addition to the Indian Premier League, expected to launch their journey in the 2022 IPL season. With the inclusion of two new franchise teams, Lucknow and Ahmedabad, IPL originality has been expanded from eight to ten iterations. Who owns Lucknow Supergiants?
Lucknow Supergiants have an energetic and business-savvy owner. The team is owned by RPSG Group (RPG Sanjiv Goenka). Under the chairmanship of Mr. Sanjiv Goenka, RPSG Group already has a reputation for its presence across several sectors including power, natural resources, retail and many more.
This is also not their first venture into the world of cricket as they formerly owned Rising Pune Supergiant, which participated in the IPL during 2016 and 2017 when two original teams were suspended due to controversy.
RPSG’s journey within Cricketing World
Sanjiv Goenka’s interest in cricket is not something new. He has previously shown his affection towards this sport with investment over control over a successful team known as ‘Rising Pune Supergiant’. Though they were part of IPL for only two seasons, they reached the finals in one and stood as runners-up.
The main reason why RPSG didn’t continue ownership was because Rising Pune Supergiant served as just temporary replacements for Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals who were both serving suspensions at that time. After CSK and RR returned in 2018, RPSG had to take a step back due to rules restricting participation beyond original eight participants
However, now there are no such restrictions attached anymore. A general consensus came out between all stakeholders about expanding franchises upto ten teams instead of eight. This gave RPSG an opportunity to re-enter and continue their business in IPL.

The city of Lucknow is not new to cricket, with international matches having been played at the BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium. But owning a franchise and witnessing the town being represented on such a grand platform will certainly pour more excitement among cricket aficionados across the region.
