Cricket is a game deeply loved and followed by millions across the globe. It is played with zest, passion, and fervor. However, this article takes a moment to remember those players who have left their mark on the cricket field but are no longer amongst us. We pay our tribute to some of the exceptional cricket players who won hearts with their talent and sportsmanship but sadly have passed away.

Alec Stewart

Alec Douglas Stewart had a massive heart attack in 1981 at the age of 68 which led to his demise. A brilliant opening batsman and wicketkeeper for England, he served as captain of the team during some crucial series. He always owned up his responsibilities both as a player and skipper and was applauded for being one of the finest gentlemen cricketers.

Martin Crowe

One of New Zealand’s best cricketer Martin Crowe lost his battle against cancer and died in March 2016, leaving an irreplaceable void in international cricket. He broke numerous world records during his tenure as a cricketer making him one of cricket’s greats. His vision about the innovations that were needed in cricket made him stand out among others.

Polly Umrigar

Indian cricket legend Polly Umrigar passed away in November 2006 after suffering from lymphocytic leukemia. As a dependable middle-order batsman and occasional off-spinner, he served Indian cricket with distinction and even held several Indian batting records including most Tests, highest aggregate runs, and individual scores.

Vijay Samuel Hazare

The name Vijay Hazare rules paramount whenever there are conversations about legendary Indian captains. He battled against intestinal cancer before breathing his last in December 2004. He became an inspiration for many aspiring cricketers and was always remembered for his leadership skills during the initial phase of Indian cricket.

Wasim Raja

Wasim Raja, a stylish middle-order batsman collapsed playing cricket due to a heart attack in August 2006. His aggressive style combined with graceful stroke play made him popular amongst Pakistani cricket lovers. Once he retired from professional cricket, he became a match referee in ICC officiating panel where he continued to serve until his untoward demise.

Imtiaz Ahmed

Pakistan’s first-ever test wicketkeeper Imtiaz Ahmed died aged 88 in December 2016 due to ailments associated with old age. He had been part of Pakistan’s inaugural Test team that played against India in Delhi in October 1952. He set various records both as a batsman and as a keeper which still remains difficult for others to pursue.

Ritchie Benaud

The voice of Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s cricket commentary, legendary all-rounder Ritchie Benaud made significant contributions to Australian cricket both on and off field before succumbing to skin cancer in April 2015. Known for his crisp player analysis and subtle humor, he held distinct personality traits radiated through TV screens worldwide.

Phillip Joel Hughes

A tragic accident led to the death of Australia’s upcoming star Phil Hughes in November 2014. Hit by a bouncer on the neck while batting, this unfortunate event shook the entire global cricket fraternity. This unexpected incident led to review and changes to players’ protective gear policies.

Cricket will always cherish their invaluable contributions towards shaping it into what it is today and these names shall be immortalized forever. Their illustrious careers have carved out inspiring paths for many aspiring cricketers. These cricket players may no longer be with us physically, but their legacy and contributions to the game will remain an integral part of cricket history.
