Shikhar Dhawan, one of the most popular and skilled openers in world cricket, is currently serving as a player for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). His athletic abilities and sharp strategic mind have put him on some of the biggest stages in world cricket. In fact, his up-to-date style has influenced many future cricketers. However, life was not always that easy for this seasoned left-handed batsman.

Early days of Shikhar Dhawan

Childhood Years & Struggling Times

Dhawan was born on December 5th, 1985, in a Punjabi family from Delhi. At a very young age, he decided to become a professional cricketer. Indeed, Dhawan worked tirelessly towards his goal but faced countless adversities. He excelled at school-level cricket and went on to make his mark at domestic level cricket by scoring heavily in Ranji Trophy matches after joining the Delhi team in early 2004.

From thereon, he played stirringly at the Under-19 World Cup which earned him recognition beyond local Indian cricket fans. But for appreciable years after that breakout performance, Dhawan spent much of his time within Bombay’s sweating changing rooms rather than facing international opponents.

His wait finally ended when he made his One Day International (ODI) debut for India against Australia, during 2010 Commonwealth Bank Series. Little success followed initially until he shot into super-stardom with his Test debut against Australia in Mohali during Border-Gavaskar Trophy series 2013 where he scored fastest-ever century on Test debut.

Following IPL seasons also saw an exponential rise in Dhawan’s form and follower base. The stylish left-hander has always been the center of attraction, from game-changing innings to his mustaches-twirled celebrations.

Shikhar Dhawan in Today’s Cricket World

Known as ‘Gabbar’ among his teammates, Dhawan is now a reliable opener for Team India and Delhi Capitals, an IPL franchise. He regained confidence after guiding Sunrisers Hyderabad’s winning campaign on various occasions and earning the Orange Cap as the highest run-scorer in the 2019 season of IPL.

Despite injuries that forced him to sit out few seasons of IPL, Dhawan remained undeterred. His performances took flight again when he shifted to Delhi Capitals. Recognized for his aggressive approach, cool-headedness under pressure and uncanny ability to find gaps, Dhawan continues to entertain cricket fans around the globe with his consistent performances.

In international circles today, especially in T20 matches, Shikhar has become one talented force to reckon with. Throughout his journey, he emerged as not only a strong player but also an inspiring leader and team player — representing India at numerous ICC events and Asia cups.

While most people know about Dhawan’s formidable partnerships with Rohit Sharma in opening innings or Virat Kohli while chasing targets, what we should not forget is how they couldn’t have had performed their best without Dhawan’s unerring consistency. Even beyond India borders, no matter whether Australia pitches or England greens – Gabbar stands tall!

Shikhar Dhawan participated recently in T20I series against England this year (2021), but he didn’t get many chances due to highly competitive other Indian openers namely KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan showing great form.

Regardless of ups & downs constituting this star cricketer’s career life till date – past struggles or recent achievements – Shikhar Dhawan still sticks tight onto our minds.
