Shubman Gill is climbing up the ranks to become an extraordinary cricketer. Born on September 8, 1999, in a rural area of Punjab, India – Gill has never let his humble upbringing deflect his ambition and dedication towards cricket.

Early Life

Childhood Interest

The seeds of passion for cricket were sown quite early in Gill’s life. His father, Lakhwinder Singh Gill, noticing Gill’s potent interest in cricket at a very young age, made it his mission to foster the youngster’s latent talent. This led him to relocate the family to Chandigarh, better adapted for Gill’s flourishing sports career.

Schooling and Cricket Coaching

Gill attended Manav Mangal High School in Chandigarh where he simultaneously received coaching from Sector 16 Stadium, one of the renowned training grounds for budding cricketers.

Rising Star

Journey into Under-19 team

His efforts paid off when he was selected for the Indian U-19 team as a vice-captain against England U-19 in February 2017. He soon proved himself by becoming the highest run-scorer with 351 runs; helping India secure victory against England U-19. Subsequently that year, he scored the double century in a match against Tamil Nadu while representing Punjab which further impelled his burgeoning reputation as an outstanding batsman.

World Cup Glory

The major breakthrough came when Shubman became part of the victorious Indian team during ICC U-19 World Cup in New Zealand (January 2018). He consistently played impressively throughout the tournament scoring 372 runs with highest score of unbeaten102 in semi-finals against Pakistan; resulting in recognition as “Player of the Tournament”.

The Debut to Success

Indian Premier League

This astounding success immediately caught attention of IPL scouts. He was picked by Kolkata Knight Riders in the 11th season (2018). Making his debut against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he went on to score a match-winning half-century later that season. His confident performances secured him as an important fixture within the team.

The International Playground

Following his dynamic performance in domestic cricket and IPL, Shubman Gill finally made his international debut on January 31st, 2019 during India’s tour of New Zealand; joining the league of illustrious cricketers representing Team India at just the age of 19 years.

Alongside playing ODIs and T20s for Team India, Gill continues to impress with his robust technique, voracious hunger for runs and mature innings construction; signaling a promising future ahead. He had proven time and again why he is considered amongst one of the most prominent emerging talents in world cricket.
