Who runs the world
The world may seem to be run by mighty superpowers or giant corporations, but if you delve a little deeper into sports culture, and more specifically into the domain of cricket, one could also argue that it’s cricket administrators and governing bodies who immensely influence how things run in their own sphere. Threaded inextricably into the socio-political fabric of several nations, especially ones like India where cricket is almost akin to religion, these entities play key roles often beyond the boundaries of the sport.

The Big-Hitters: Cricket’s Governing Bodies

One can not undermine the significance of the International Cricket Council (ICC) when discussing about who runs the world of cricket. This global governing body for international cricket was established way back in 1909 under another name – “Imperial Cricket Conference”. Although ICC started with limited powers initially, its role has expanded over time to include administering Women’s Cricket and Under-19 Cricket along with Men’s Internationals.

The primary objective of the ICC is to ensure uniformity and fairness in rules across countries and formats. While these overarching tasks may sound simple on paper, they entail dealing with multifaceted issues such as player behavior, corruption allegations, match-fixing scandals, anti-doping regulations and occasionally even political disputes between member nations connected via common thread of cricket.

Role of National Cricket Boards

While ICC holds jurisdiction over international matches and tournaments, each participating country has its own national board which operates within ICC’s framework but holds considerable power at domestic level. Board Of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI), England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Australia’s Body – Cricket Australia are few such national boards responsible for the growth and administration of cricket in their respective territories.

These organizations select national teams, organize local leagues & test series and establish various training facilities. Like ICC, national cricket boards too have their share of role in running the cricket world by combating anti-competitive practices, securing players’ rights and resolving instances of disputes within teams or with external entities.

Cricket’s Billion Dollar Economy

Moreover, driving a large part of world cricket are its commercial dimensions comprising broadcasting rights, advertisement revenues, sponsorships and ticket sales. Broadcasting agencies around the globe generate billions of dollars out of viewer subscriptions & advertisements aired during matches.

Sponsors too contribute heavily to this economy by investing huge amounts into tournaments (like IPL, BBL) thereby adding to the overall financial muscle that drives cricket globally. This prominent circle consisting ICC’s governance, monetary forces and national boards rightly manifests how collectively they run the global show of cricket.

The Player Power

However, it tosses out an incomplete picture if one talks about who runs the cricketing landscape without mentioning the players for they breathe life into the game itself. Their performance on field can shape history and stir emotions of millions following this sport across continents. Players inspire young budding cricketers, create their fan-base influencing public opinions & beliefs associated with cricket.

In essence, Cricket is governed not by any single force but involves a delicate balance between various stakeholders – governing bodies like ICC and National Boards; economic powers such as broadcasters, advertisers & sponsors; along with players whom fans passionately follow making them insurmountable contributors to how Cricket World operates.

Final Thoughts

And so while politicians may sway nations and powerful corporates might seemingly control economies, in many parts of the globe where willow meets leather under an intense sun or floodlights; when roars echo amid packed stadiums – it is these organizations, businesses and athletes who indeed enjoy a power which transcends borders capturing hearts whilst shaping narratives both inside & outside sporting arenas. They don’t merely decide ‘how’ cricket runs, but determine ‘why’ it matters.
